UV printing is how we get photo-level detail, readable fine print, and raised 3D texture onto a patch in one shot. Here's what it is, how it builds depth without a mold, and all the places it can go.
UV printing uses a specialty ink that cures instantly under ultraviolet light. Because every pass hardens on the spot, the printer can stack ink layer on layer to build raised, textured, and glossy areas right into the artwork, all in full color. For patches, we print onto a flexible leatherette base, so the finished piece looks and feels a lot like PVC, with far more detail than a mold can hold.
How It Works
This is the part that surprises most people. A UV patch can look molded, but there's no mold involved. The printer builds everything up from a flat sheet, one thin layer at a time.
The printer lays down a liquid ink that's similar to epoxy, then hits it with UV light so it hardens almost instantly. No drying time, no smudging, no waiting around.
Since each layer cures right away, the printer can print on top of itself again and again. That's where the domes, raised lettering, and texture come from, and the layers blend so smoothly you can't see a single line between them.
Gloss or matte goes exactly where the design calls for it, then the patch is cut to shape and backed with the attachment you need.
Illustration, not to scale. Depth comes from stacking cured ink exactly where the design needs it.
How It Adds Depth
Flat prints look flat. UV printing lets us decide exactly what sits high, what stays low, and what shines, so the artwork has some real dimension to it.
Want a helmet, badge, or emblem that bulges out? We build it in gradual layers so it comes out as one smooth dome instead of a stair step.
Lettering and borders can sit up off the surface, so they catch the light and stand out from across the room.
Scales, grain, patterns, you name it. Some texture is subtle enough that you'll feel it before you see it, like the fish scales on one of our hat patches.
Gloss can cover the whole patch or just one element. Putting it in only a few spots makes those parts shine against everything around them.
One of our favorite examples is a pilot patch. The whole helmet bulges up off the patch, the text and border are embossed, and the gloss went on the helmet visor and nowhere else, so the visor curves and shines like the real thing.
It's a flat sheet going in and something that looks sculpted coming out, without a mold, a die, or a single stitch.
Detail and Color
Molded PVC is built from solid color fills, and embroidery is limited by how small thread can go. UV printing doesn't have either problem. We've had customers come to us after another shop couldn't make their fine print legible, and on UV, you can read every word. Even with all that detail, the flexible ink we use bends with the patch, so it still feels a lot like PVC in your hand.
How It Compares
Every patch type has its place. UV printing is the pick when you want full color and fine detail without giving up raised texture.
| UV Printed | PVC | Embroidered | Sublimated | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Color | Full CMYK, gradients, Pantone matching | Solid color fills | Thread colors | Full color and gradients |
| Fine Text and Detail | Excellent, small text stays readable | Limited by the mold | Limited by thread size | Excellent |
| Raised Texture | Yes, built in layers: domes, emboss, texture | Yes, molded layers | Yes, stitched texture | No, flat |
| Gloss Options | Full or spot gloss, plus matte | Set by the material | Thread sheen | Set by the fabric |
| Feel | Flexible, similar to PVC | Flexible rubber | Soft, classic fabric | Smooth fabric |
Applications
From plate carriers to hats to the squadron bar wall, here's where UV patches earn their keep.
Unit, morale, and team patches heat pressed onto hook and loop, ready for plate carriers, packs, and range bags.
We press UV patches straight onto the hat, no hook and loop needed, for a clean look that's built in.
UV patches can go extra large, way bigger than your typical patch. Think full motorcycle club back patches.
A ridiculously oversized patch to hang in the squadron bar, the firehouse, or the clubhouse? Yes, we'll make that.
Leatherette comes in textures too. Golf ball textured sheets make a perfect patch for your tournament, league, or club.
Attachment Options
Once the adhesive on a UV patch is heated and cooled, it bonds ridiculously strong. Pick the attachment that fits your gear.
Pressed onto hook and loop backing for gear you swap patches on and off of.
The adhesive backing activates with a heat press or an iron for a permanent bond.
The classic option for jackets, vests, and anything you want stitched down.
Want a sticker-style peel and stick? It's not something we keep stocked, but we can get it. Just ask.
Same Shop, More Options
UV printing lives right next to our lasers, so if you want a different look, there are a couple of other routes worth knowing about.
Two layers of leatherette, like brown over black. We engrave away the top layer to reveal the color underneath for a sharp, rugged look that's great on hats.
Metallic acrylic over a contrasting color, engraved to reveal the layer below, with tri-layer options for three colors. Heat pressing softens the acrylic so it takes the shape of the hat and holds it once it cools, giving you a rigid, hard patch.
FAQ
What is a UV printed patch?
A UV printed patch is made by printing full-color artwork onto a leatherette base with ink that cures instantly under ultraviolet light. Because each layer hardens right away, the printer can stack ink to create raised areas, texture, and gloss right in the design.
Is a UV patch the same as a PVC patch?
Not quite. PVC patches are molded rubber, while UV patches are printed in layers on a flexible leatherette base. They look and feel similar, but UV printing can hold much finer detail, readable small text, and full-color gradients.
How does UV printing create a 3D effect?
The printer lays down a layer of ink, cures it with UV light, and prints the next layer right on top. Repeating that in specific spots builds domes, embossed lettering, raised borders, and texture, and the layers blend so smoothly you can't see lines between them.
Are UV printed patches flexible?
Yes. We use a flexible ink, so the finished patch bends with your gear instead of sitting stiff, a lot like PVC.
Can you match my Pantone colors?
Yes. UV printing runs in full CMYK, and if you have a Pantone code, the printer can match it.
How big can a UV printed patch be?
UV patches can go extra large, which opens the door to full back patches and oversized wall pieces. Send us the size you have in mind and our team will let you know what works.
How do UV patches attach?
UV patches can be hook and loop, heat press or iron-on, or sew-on. Adhesive-back is available on request.
How do I order a UV printed patch?
Start your custom order on badasspatches.com and let us know you're interested in UV printing in your order comments. Artwork is always free, and you won't pay anything until you've approved your design.
That's our favorite kind. Send it our way and we'll show you what UV printing can do with it.
